Overview

The Fleet Services Specialist (Auto Mechanic) serves as the senior technician responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of the Sheriff’s Office vehicle fleet, including patrol units, specialty vehicles, and support equipment. This position performs advanced diagnostic and mechanical work, ensures compliance with safety and law enforcement operational standards, and provides technical leadership and direction to the sheriff’s office staff. The ideal candidate is a highly skilled, self-motivated professional with strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving abilities, dedicated to maintaining a safe and reliable fleet that supports the mission and public safety operations of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced diagnostics, repair, and preventive maintenance on a wide range of law enforcement vehicles and equipment.
  • Lead and coordinate daily workflow, assignments, and quality assurance for the Fleet Services team.
  • Ensure all vehicles meet or exceed safety, performance, and operational readiness standards required for patrol and emergency response.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, assist with parts inventory, budgeting, and vendor coordination.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and hands-on support to the sheriff’s Office staff.
  • Assist in developing and implementing fleet maintenance schedules, procedures, and best practices.
  • Support emergency response readiness by ensuring timely vehicle availability and repair turnaround.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; completion of formal automotive or diesel technology training preferred.
  • Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in automotive and equipment repair, including law enforcement or emergency vehicles.
  • Possession of valid ASE certifications or equivalent credentials strongly desired.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to pass a background investigation appropriate for work within a law enforcement agency.

Essential Skills

  • Strong mechanical and electrical diagnostic abilities across modern vehicle systems.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement fleet specifications, emergency equipment installation, and pursuit-rated vehicle maintenance.
  • Proficiency with computerized diagnostic tools, repair software, and fleet management systems.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills with the ability to prioritize multiple assignments.
  • Ability to explain highly technical automotive information to non-technical staff.
  • Strong commitment to safety, attention to detail, and adherence to established policies and regulations.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed primarily in a fleet maintenance shop environment with regular exposure to noise, fumes, moving parts, and tools or equipment associated with automotive repair.
  • May be required to work outdoors or in adverse weather conditions.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting objects up to 50 pounds; occasional lifting of heavier items with assistance.
  • May be required to work extended hours, on-call shifts, or respond to emergencies after hours to support law enforcement operations.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required in accordance with safety policies.
